So been watching Doctor Who again, started at the first season of the relaunch knowing what I know now and have realized somethings. First off Eccleston's Doctor is really much more interesting than I remembered. With what we now know happened his character acting like he did is so understandable. He was broken so badly since he (thinks) that he just killed his entire species off to save well everything. He is trying to find who he is again, and I think trying to see if he is still worthy and deserving of the name The Doctor.
His companions were well... ugh. First he gave us Captain Jack Harkness. Jack is amazing and one of the best characters in Doctor who and one of my favorite for the new series. His chatacter is very big and brash and everything we came to love about Jack. No complaints here at all.
Rose Tyler. Ah Rose. Ok I don't like Rose. My dislike for her grew more in the second season, but I'll explain why that is later. Why I dislike her for this season. She is really boring. I can not, fopr the life of me explain her character other than screams, does stupid and never stands up to the Doctor. A friend of mine complains that this Doctor was the first to kill, or murder some one. Umm no, Troughton did that (The Dominators comes to mind) Hartnell was willing to bash a guys skull in with a rock simply because he was slowing them down (An Unearthly Child.) Why? Because he is a Time Lord and to the Time Lords everyone else was a lower species and less than they were. But unless those people were really really really really evil and the Doctors warning didn't scare them away then they were not killed. I have a point, almost there. In the second episode when the Doctor summons Cassandra back and lets her explode, I am really ok with what he did. Rose however did fuck all. No she meekly says no. When Hartnell's Doctor took the rock to kill a guy, his companion Ian got in his way and stopped him, where as Rose didn't do anything. And that pissed me off. The companion is there to hold the Doctor back, to give him persective on things and to (essentially) be good. But oh no, Rose did nothing! To me she never recovered, All she did after this was scream and be stupid. She did a little good in the last episode but it was only because she didn't like being sent home. Though it did lead to Captain Jack becoming a fixed point and the Doctor regenerating, so that zeros out the whole idea.
Then there is Adam. Oh gods this guy. I honestly think that he was put in to hide how aweful Rose was. He is there for two episodes and what does he do? He is a minor character in the first story and then is a pure dumbass in the second. Ya Totally the worst companion ever. Doubt anyone can disagree.
The stories were interesting. It was a lot of do something and then come back later and see what happened because of this. Outside of UNIT and Peladon during the Third Doctors run, I dont remember that happening. But it was showing the Doctor what happens when he, for lack of a better term, plays god with people. Also explains what happened between the end of the origional run and created some interesting arguments, like the slitheen family being raised this way. Or the saving and damning of humanity with satellite 5. The worst episode was the one where Rose went back to see her dad and caused time to shit itself. Interesting concept but just proved why Rose should have been sent home way earlier.
But overall I enjoyed this series. And I remember the original run and how excited I was for the next season and the new Doctor. -sigh-
