So I read up on Canada Posts decision to end home delivery. A lot of people have raged about it since the announcement about a month ago. Oh 6,000 to 8,0000 people will loose there job! We will have to go so far to get the mail! The cost is going up! How can the government do this?
First off, calm your damn tits people. Yes there will be losses of positions, but Canada Post figures 15,000 people will be leaving or retiring over the same period. So really to maintain the projected levels they need to hire 11,000 to 13,000 people. Which means there will end up needing to hire more people than they let go, unless my math is completely wrong.
Second walking to get the mail. Yes there will be some people who have difficulties to go and get it. For these people it will suck. But for the majority there should be no problems to walk a short distance to get their mail. Also at my parents home, they have never had home delivery. In the 25 years (or so) they have lived there, we have had to walk to a community mail box. At the farthest location for this set of boxes a person had to walk a block, maybe a block and a half, so even in winter it wasn't that far. Finally the larger parcels. Instead of them being left outside the door you get a note saying go to this location to retrieve the package. Hmm wait isn't that a better idea meaning its less likely the item will get stolen or damaged?
Third the costs are going up. No shit, the cost for everything is going up. The wages paid to the postal employees has increased, the costs associated with the postal service have increased, more pension money is needed to be paid out. As such, the postal service is not making as much to cover its costs. Also how many letters or parcels does the average person send out a month? Personally I send out a few a month, by personal choice. Hells even a year? I have relatives and friends who send out maybe two items a year. Why? Easy the Internet, sending emails is faster, plus text messages and simmilar ways of communicating. So between these of course the postal services will be used less. Less use means less money. So cover these costs prices need to increase.
But then again I may be wrong, I'm just one guy with an opinion.
